Real-time earthquake data from USGS. Recent earthquakes today, California earthquakes, Alaska earthquakes, and largest seismic events worldwide.
The USGS detects approximately 55 earthquakes per day worldwide. Most are too small to be felt. Only about 13 major earthquakes (M7.0+) occur per year on average.
Alaska is the most seismically active US state, generating about 11% of all earthquakes worldwide. California ranks second due to activity along the San Andreas Fault system.
Earthquakes below magnitude 2.5 are rarely felt. Those between 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt but cause minimal damage. Earthquakes of M5.5+ can cause damage, with M7.0+ considered major events.
The 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile (M9.5) is the largest ever recorded. In the US, the 1964 Good Friday earthquake in Alaska (M9.2) was the largest domestically recorded event.
