United States National Monument in California
Muir Woods National Monument is a United States national monument managed by the National Park Service and named after naturalist John Muir. It is located on Mount Tamalpais near the Pacific coast in southwestern Marin County, California. The Monument is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is 12 miles (19ย km) north of San Francisco. It protects 554 acres (224ย ha), of which 240 acres (97ย ha) are old-growth coast redwood forests, one of the few such stands remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Walk among old growth coast redwoods, cooling their roots in the fresh water of Redwood Creek and lifting their crowns to reach the sun and fog. Federally protected as a National Monument since 1908, this primeval forest is both refuge and laboratory, revealing our relationship with the living landscape. What will you discover in Muir Woods?

Muir Woods is open every day of the year, with exceptions for inclement weather and hazardous conditions. Our core winter hours are 8AM-5PM; in the spring, summer, and fall we are open later based on increased daylight hours. Updates on closures will be posted as an alert to the website and on social-media pages.
